HID stands for High Intensity Discharge, a lighting technology that replaces the filamented light bulb with a capsule filled with gas and a small quantity of metallic elements.
The light is emitted from an arc discharge between two closely spaced electrodes hermetically sealed inside the small quartz glass capsule.
To operate, it requires a ballast, which supplies proper voltage and controls current.
